Cruelty

Is it really cruel to ask a brand new paramedic,
just as they're standing,
needle in hand,
about to stick their first IV into a live,
on-the-road patient,
if they're sure that the beautiful vein they're about to attack,
isn't really a, ummm...
you know... for example,
an Artery?
Not that I would condone, advocate, or participate in such
childish behaviour.
I'm just asking...

Yes. Incredibly cruel.

Try doing it to a junior doctor. They won't believe you, even if you're telling the truth.

I tell all my newbie students to check that it's not an artery they're about to access.

You know, for their sake. NOT because i've done it myself. At all. Ever. Nope. Not me *ahem* :D
