Ever Before

She holds her eldest child close.

Closer than ever before.

Her sobs are pained and silent.

Quieter than ever before.

She needs him as he needs her.

More than ever before.

They've said goodbye to the baby.

They'd not said it ever before.

Been there, done that.
Almost.

After my friend turned up at my door, ashen faced, shaking, handed me his car keys and said I was driving him and his wife to London.
Where at the age of one day his son was preparing for heart surgery.

Eighteen months later, we buried my friend's baby, named after me.

I still cry.
